What does it cost to plug this well?

The estimator finds the most specific group of comparable plugged wells that has a grade of A or B and returns their cost range. If no group qualifies, it says so.

How to read the result

The range is the 10th to 90th percentile of reported costs for the comparable group. It is tested on wells held out of the calculation: the grade reports how far the median missed those wells and how many fell inside the range. Total depth is known for 38% of wells on file, from sources whose terms allow commercial use. A depth-band estimate is used where it passes grading (currently in Colorado, Kentucky, Louisiana). Well age and condition are not used: no graded adjustment exists for them. The result says when an input was not used.

Data through 2026-06-30. Sample sizes are the wells behind each figure. Grades come from held-out tests, not in-sample fit: A needs 200+ independent cost observations and a held-out error of 25% or less; B needs 60+ and 40% or less. Anything weaker is shown as Insufficient data. How grading works.
